Log of Her Majesty's screw steam frigate "Curac̜oa" bearing the [flag] of Commodore Sir. W. Wiseman / kept by Wentworth Bayly. 1865.

Manuscript logbook kept by a midshipman aboard the Frigate Curac̜oa, April to November, 1865. Bayly records events during the voyage, which departed from Farm Cove, Sydney, including stops at Norfolk Island, Savage Island, Samoa, Friendly Islands, Fiji, Santa Cruz, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, and Tonga. Illustrated with nine original watercolors and two pen and ink maps (Fiji and San Cristobal). One of the watercolors depicts the skirmish at Port Resolution on the morning of August 12, 1865 when the ship engaged "hostile villages". The Curac̜oa shelled the villages and shot rockets. Later in the day a party was sent "to destroy [the] villages." A similar incident, though not illustrated, occured on September 26 on the way from Erromanga to New Caledonia. The watercolors are mostly landscapes and coastal profiles, though one depicts religious idols and is titled "Solomon Island Gods." For a detailed published account of the voyage see Julius Lucius Brenchley. Jottings during the cruise of H.M.S. Curac̜oa among the South Sea Islands in 1865 (London, 1873).
